Introduction to the Speck Monitor

February 24, 2017 @ 8:30 am - 11:30 am

Cost | Free

Event DescriptionThe Speck is an indoor air quality monitor that empowers you to breath easier. During this session, participants will receive a demonstration of the Speck, followed by an opportunity to test air quality in several locations, along with an exploration of how the Speck can be integrated into your instruction as an inexpensive, yet valuable learning tool.

Background | Poor air quality is a serious global health problem, affecting billions of people every day. The air we breathe indoors is most often polluted by our own actions, causing fine particles (PM2.5) to be released into our homes. Common sources can include burning kerosene, wood or oil, smoking tobacco products, releases from household cleaners, pesticides, building materials and more. Fine particles are so small that they are invisible to the naked eye, but large enough to lodge deep into our lungs, get into our bloodstream, and cause illnesses such as asthma, heart disease, chronic bronchitis, emphysema and pneumonia. Speck was developed to help you monitor the actions that take place at home, work, or school and empower you to make changes to improve your personal air quality!

Skill Level | Beginner (no previous knowledge expected or needed)

Note: Speck Air Monitors are available to borrow from the AIU’s STEAM Lending Library, along with many Carnegie Libraries.
